Disappearing Newspapers: Will Online Media be Enough?

I one day hope to work within the realm of journalism, a fascinating part of the communication industries. An interesting and highly impactful development in this career path is the decrease in newspaper sales and journalism’s transition into an online market. Newspapers around the United States are directing their efforts towards their online content and print editions of news are becoming less relevant. This has been a trend in news for the last couple of decades but the pace has picked up rapidly in recent years due to a number of reasons. As a member of The Westfield Voice, I’ve seen the impact firsthand. We did away with the print edition at the end of 2018 and have dedicated our time to the online news site.

The Washington Post discusses this development and talks about the positives and negatives of the changing news landscape. The biggest takeaways from their article are the different questions it raises about the future of journalism. Two of the main concerns are if newspapers will be able to survive strictly off of digital revenue and if there will be enough jobs for journalists when the news exists solely in an online space. The most alarming statistic the article provides is that between 1994 and 2014, newsroom employment fell nearly 40 percent.
